"Sea Salt" ASTM D1141-98
"Sea-Salt" ASTM D1141-98 (Re-approved 2013) Formula a, Table x1.1, Section 6 (Original standard ASTM D1141-52) is a sea salt mix that is used in the standard practice for the preparation of substitute ocean water. It standardizes seawater conditions for many uses including accelerated corrosion studies, oceanographic research, ocean instrument calibration and chemical research testing.
Specifications: This product meets the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) standard ASTM D1141-52, Formula a, Table 1, Section 4 and the updated standard ASTM D1141-98 (2013) Formula a, Table x1.1, Section 6 which is the standard practice for the preparation of substitute ocean water.
Description: "Sea-Salt" ASTM D1141-98 (Original Standard ASTM D1141-52) is a simulated sea salt mix containing elements found in natural seawater in quantities greater than 0.0004%. "Sea Salt" ASTM D1141-98 is granular and colorless. The mixture contains U.S.P., N.F. and High Grade commercial salts with no anti-caking agents.
Packaging and Storage: This product is available in a 17oz bottle (makes approximately 3 gallons), 20lb pail (makes approximately 57 gallons) and a 50lb pail (makes approximately 143 gallons). To improve caking resistance the product should be stored in a dry covered area with humidity below 75%. The shelf life of "Sea-Salt" ASTM D 1141-98 is more than three years, as long as the package is kept dry and closed when not in use.
Directions: To prepare one liter of synthetic seawater, dissolve 41.953 grams of "Sea Salt ASTM D1141-98 in water, with enough water to yield a total of one liter synthetic/artificial seawater solution. To prepare one gallon of artificial seawater, dissolve 5 1/2 ounces (156 grams) of "Sea Salt" ASTM D1141-98 in water, with enough water to yield a total of 1 gallon synthetic seawater solution. After mixing, adjust pH to 8.2 using 0.1 N solution of sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid. The sea salt does include a small number of insoluble solids occurring naturally in some of the main components. This remaining residue can be strained or filtered out and disposed of without affecting the accuracy of the dissolved seawater mixture. Depending on the nature of the testing and the degree of accuracy needed we suggest mixing with Deionized (DI) or Distilled water. For a more highly accurate result we recommend using the ASTM Type II reagent grade deionized/distilled water.
Applications: (Not intended for human consumption)
Corrosion Studies: used in accelerated corrosion testing/studies where effects of seawater are on the following: Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, protective coatings, paint, electrochemical processes, surface active agents and ceramics. Testing of fire fighting foam with standardized seawater. This product is used in many types of corrosion and environmental testing labs. (e.g. oil and gas corrosion prevention, salt spray testing and salt fog testing - C.A.S.S. Testing)
Ocean Instrument Testing: standardizes seawater environment for consistent test comparisons and used for oceanographic research in environmental testing chambers.
Biological: supports marine biological life; it can also be used as a tissue muscle preservative.
Chemical Processing: activity effects of minor trace elements may be compared in chemical processing units. Can be used for any type of application or testing that requires Synthetic Seawater.
